Suggested Books

Here we have listed a collection of books that you may find useful.  Try to keep in mind that medical knowledge is always changing and expanding and that no book will be "state-of-the-art" for long.  We have tried to include only books from reliable authors and publishers, but we can not screen each book completely.  Nothing can replace the knowledge you can obtain by speaking with your pediatrician, so if you have a question about something you read in one of these books, please give us a call.  More books will be added periodically.

bulletDriven to Distraction, by Hallowell and Ratey - Subtitled:  Recognizing and Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder from Childhood through Adulthood.  This book is an informative and readable resource for families with children who have this complex and often frustrating disorder.
bulletSleep Disorders
bulletSolve Your Child's Sleep Problems, by Ferber - This book discusses common sleep problems such as night waking, children who demand to sleep with their parents, night-mares and -terrors, and irregular sleeping patterns.  It also discusses ways to prevent many of the above-mentioned problems and the normal physiology of sleep.  Read this book before problems arise.

Breast Feeding

bulletThe Nursing Mother's Companion, by Huggins - With hints on how to prepare for breast feeding before the birth to information on breast feeding through the toddler years, this book is a valuable resource, especially for first time mothers.

General Child Care

bulletAmerican Academy of Pediatrics Publications:
bulletCaring for Your Baby and Young Child (Birth to Age 5), Caring for Your School-Age Child (Ages 5 to 12), and Caring for Your Adolescent (Ages 12 to 21) - These three books contain a wealth of information beginning before a baby is born and lasting past the school years.  They discuss everything from well child care (feeding, safety, etc.), to development, to common symptoms and illnesses that you can expect to encounter.
bulletGuide to Your Child's Symptoms - The title is self-explanatory.  This book covers symptoms from birth through Adolescence, most of which is also covered in the Caring for Your... series mentioned above.
bulletGuide to Your Child's Nutrition - Again, much of this information is included in the Caring for Your... series.  It provides very reasonable and effective advice on how to deal with nutritional problems and conflicts with your child, in addition to lots of useful general nutritional information.
bulletWhat to Expect When You're Expecting, What to Expect the First Year, and What to Expect the Toddler Years, by Eisenberg, et al - These books discuss ways to prepare for pregnancy, childbirth, and the raising of your children through the preschool years.  They are organized chronologically and are very good at helping new parents distinguish between old wives' tales and actual pediatric fact.
